There was only one other time when Joe could recall Jane's life depending on him. It had been after a bounty hunting job had gone bad and the man Calamity had been after had somehow managed to get the drop on her. She had been beaten to within an inch of her life and left for dead in the desert. It was there that Joe had found her, minutes away from becoming supper for some hungry vultures.

A light banging sound woke Wild Bill from his light sleep with a start. He jumped up from his bedroll, his gun drawn and cocked in the time it took an ordinary man to blink. Fortunately for the twins, he didn't fire right away.
He found the two of them standing not far from their tiny camp, taking turns shooting pebbles from their slingshots at other rocks lined up on a boulder. The sound of impact between the rocks and the pebbles was the noise that woke him.

If Calamity thought her leg was sore before, it was nothing compared to the agony she was going through at the present time. She and Joe had been walking for a few hours, judging by the position of the sun, and with every step she took a new flare of pain would shoot up her right leg.
A lesser person would have collapsed and refused to go any further. But Jane liked to think that she was made of tougher stuff. Besides, lying prone in a forest filled with wolves, bears and mountain lions with the sun going down would most likely be a death sentence. So
